The fourth edition of Black Canvas Contemporary Film Festival took place from the 1st to the 10th of October 2020 under an innovative hybrid format and plenty of surprises for Mexican cinephiles.


Transmutation of the Canvas: Fifth Anniversary Edition 2021

Conscious of the current situation and akin to the defiant and bold spirit consistent with its history, Black Canvas Contemporary Film Festival has decided to evolve and transform; finding new paths to offer the best of cinema d’ auteur form the international scene and to keep on consolidating as one of the most radical and forward-looking film festivals in Mexico.

With the aim of broadening the exhibiting options in order to cover the needs of the Mexican audience and, at the same time, responsibly complying with the requirements and recommendations of the health authorities, Black Canvas Contemporary Film Festival shall once again mutate into a hybrid format, through which we shall continue to offer the best in film in our traditional venues: Cineteca Nacional (Mexican Cinematheque), the Goethe-Institut, the Universidad de la Comunicación, as well as several other venues throughout Mexico City.

We add to this list our new digital venue, FilminLatino, an online streaming platform whose range reaches all Mexico, which shall gather a large part of our program, and where cinephiles from all over the country may get a chance to discover and dive into this 5th edition’s program online. Concurrently, during the dates of the festival and through diverse means such as our webpage, social media and the digital media of the Universidad de la Comunicación, we shall provide talks, Q&As, round tables, interviews and diverse content which stem from our acknowledged academic and formation program Extension of the Canvas an opening for encounters and expanding on cinema.

As an extra effort in our quest to build new audiences to the particular and selected cinematic offering by Black Canvas Contemporary Film Festival, we are glad to announce that all the online screenings through FilminLatino, as well as those which shall take place in the physical venues such as Universidad de la Comunicación, and the Goethe-Institut shall be free of charge.

The Transmutation Continues: Beyond the Canvas, new international competition.

As part of our unrelenting quest, we proudly introduce our well-known section Beyond the Canvas, focused in selecting the most radical and thought-provoking films from the international scene shall, once again, in this 5th edition, become an international competition which brings together formats, genres and renowned authors with the new talents that serve as example of the new and future pathways being set forth by filmmakers.

This competition joins our International Feature Film Competition, New Horizon, our International Short Film Competition and the Mexican Short Film Competition. All these shall be overseen by a jury of international filmmakers, who will honor us with their presence –both in person and physically– in what aims to be a conscious and responsible celebration of filmmaking this coming October.

Our competitions, activities, jury and guests, as well as the rest of our program shall be announced this next September. Meanwhile, we invite you to stay tuned to our social media where, periodically, we shall be revealing more surprises and detailed information of our fourth edition.
